Dry Eyes
What causes dry eyes?
This is caused by an insufficient production of tears that lubricates the front surface of the eye.
What are the common symptoms?
Common symptoms include a burning and gritty sensation of the eyes. These symptoms may vary during the day.
Is there a cure?
No. Treatment is aimed at relieving the symptoms and will usually be needed indefinitely.
Artificial teardrops are used as often as is necessary to keep the eyes comfortable. A lubricating ointment can be used at night.
Please note: The symptoms of dry eye may increase in certain environments, i.e. smokey rooms or in buildings with central heating.
